change of plans; Jayron Kearse’s jersey number will not change in 2023.
The Cowboys safety was previously announced as the first player in franchise history to wear number 0 after a new league rule was approved in March.
But during Thursday’s OTA practice session, several reporters noticed that Kearse was still wearing his No. 27 jersey. After the team’s walkthrough, the 29-year-old confirmed to members of the media that he would be donning that jersey for the upcoming season.
“When you see a ballgame in September, I’m going to be 27,” Kearse said. “I’m wearing 27.”
So what?
“There were some logistical things that we couldn’t work out.”
Back in March, safety Jayron Kearse was expected to be the first Cowboys player to wear the 0. Plans have changed since then. He wore 27 during yesterday’s OTAs.

It is not clear what those logical things would have been. Current rules stipulate that a player who wishes to change his jersey number must first purchase the entire remaining unsold inventory of his old number; Whether this was the case for Kearse is unknown.
Linebacker Micah Parsons also expressed interest in wearing the No. 0 jersey back in March, but Fox San Antonio KABB reporter Tweeted by Chuck Mikitinac That Parsons told him he’s not sure what the team will do with the numbers this season.
