Deep CB class helps Steelers fill other NFL draft needs

The Pittsburgh Steelers will have some very tough decisions to make when it comes to the 2023 NFL Draft. With two picks in the first 32, the Steelers basically have two first-round picks to fill the need for two big draft picks.

Pittsburgh could get some help from a loaded cornerback class this season. Cornerback is not a top requirement, but it is an easy option for many teams. This means that as the Steelers move forward over time, there is a real chance that a top player in a high position of need will fall to them.

Going through several simulations, it looks like at least three and a maximum of five cornerbacks could come off the board before the Steelers make a pick. Here are the top corners in the upcoming draft based on simulations:

1-Jerry Porter Jr., Penn State

2-Christian Gonzalez, Oregon

3-Devon Witherspoon, Illinois

4-Cam Smith, South Carolina

5-Kelly Ringo, Georgia

6-Clark Phillips III, Utah

If, say, four of those guys are off the board when the Steelers run on the clock, that means two things. First, it means the Steelers should be drafting the fifth best player at any position as cornerbacks, which doesn’t make good sense this early in the draft.

But it also means another top game could be falling. Perhaps the Steelers can steal Ohio State offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr. or Texas Tech edge rusher Tyree Wilson. But at the very least, Pittsburgh should be able to land one of the top three offensive tackles or an elite inside linebacker.
