How the Colts signing QB Gardner Minshew impacts draft plans

The Indianapolis Colts addressed the quarterback situation in free agency by signing Gardner Minshew to a one-year deal, but how could that affect their plans in the 2023 NFL draft?

It has been widely expected that the Colts will be among teams in the first round targeting the quarterback prospect. Remaining No. 4 overall, which is behind the quarterback-need Carolina Panthers (No. 1) and Houston Texans (No. 2), it looks likely that the Colts will find success with a third quarterback across the board.

That doesn’t mean they go after the quarterback, they won’t have their personal QB1 in the draft. A very real scenario where the first two quarterbacks off the board are unlikely given that the Colts are at the top of their rankings.

Signing Minshew shouldn’t change the Colts’ approach to the draft, with all signs pointing to selecting the quarterback. If anything, the signing should give them more confidence in getting the player they want.

Having Minsue on the roster is a strong addition. He’s been working with Shane Steichen for two full seasons, he’s a great partner and can step up to a productive level when needed.

But if the Colts feel guilty about one or more of their quarterback prospects, Miesnow’s presence shouldn’t prevent them from getting the player they want, even though it’s most likely they’ll now go No. 3 overall. Can go to

Regardless, signing Minshew gives the Colts a strong option for a rookie as a bridge quarterback if he needs more time to develop, and the transaction gives Indy the quarterback with their first-round pick. Shouldn’t stop you from choosing.
